Brent Staples’s article “Spinning a lethal mix in American hip-hop” (Meanwhile, May 13) attributes an increase in rap-related violence to the music without considering the broader picture of how violence of all kinds is seeping into the American psyche.

Americans are increasingly accepting of blatant violence in the major sports, movies, music videos, video games and even U.S. foreign policy. Society desperately needs nonviolent role modes.
