Re: An Afghan Parliament

That there was no violence during the inauguration of President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is interpreted as a success story in the American press (“An Afghan parliament,” Editorial, Dec.9). What most people forget is that Karzai is a member of the Pashtun tribe, which resides on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, an area that supports Osama bin Laden and Taliban remnants.

Why would the Pashtuns cause Karzai serious trouble at this moment? They’re just waiting to see how he conducts his policies. Should Karzai continue to be perceived as a puppet, no life insurance salesmen will be visiting him despite his heavy security.
